Mario Piazza

Nacido en la ciudad de Nueva York el 23 de septiembre de 1956, vive en Rosario desde los diez meses de edad. Tenía 21 años cuando completó su cortometraje "Sueño para un oficinista" (1978), el que fue exhibido en los recitales del grupo de rock Irreal, que ejecutaba "en vivo" la banda sonora del film.

Sus filmes documentales "Papá gringo" (1983), "La Escuela de la Señorita Olga" (1991) y "Cachilo, el poeta de los muros" (1999/2000) han tenido considerable difusión y reconocimiento en festivales y medios culturales. Su largo documental “Madres con ruedas” (2006), dirigido junto a su esposa Mónica Chirife, tuvo estreno comercial en las ciudades de Rosario y Buenos Aires, y fue premiado y exhibido en varios países, incluyendo Brasil, España y China.

Fue director de los Concursos Municipales de Cine (1987 y 1988) y Presidente del Jurado del Festival Latinoamericano de Video de Rosario en sus cinco primeras ediciones, de 1993 a 1998.

Trabajó para la Escuela Provincial de Cine y TV de Rosario, desde su fundación en 1984 hasta 2016, desempeñándose en su Centro de Documentación.

Le han dedicado sendas muestras retrospectivas los festivales de Cine Súper 8 de Bruselas y de Barcelona (1984), la Escuela Municipal de Artes Plásticas "Manuel Musto" (1996), la Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo de la UBA (1999), el Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires (Mamba, 2001), el 8º Festival Latinoamericano de Video de Rosario (2001), el Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba, 2007), la Universidad Abierta Interamericana sede Rosario (2010), el Departamento de Culturas Ibérica y Latinoamericana de la Universidad de Stanford (2015) y la sección de cine Super 8 del Festival de Cine de Mar del Plata (2016).

Fue declarado Cineasta Distinguido de la Ciudad por el H. Concejo Municipal de Rosario, el 6 de octubre de 2004.

Entre 2001 y 2016 fue editor del boletín independiente Cineastas Rosarinos, que, distribuido por correo electrónico, estaba dirigido a los realizadores y estudiantes de medios audiovisuales de la ciudad de Rosario, llegando a unos 2000 destinatarios.

Miembro fundador de la Asociación Rosarina de Documentalistas, creada en septiembre de 2010, fue elegido como su primer Presidente.

 

Born in New York on September 23rd, 1956, he lives in Rosario, Argentina, since he was ten months old. He was 21 when he finished his short film "Sueño para un oficinista" (1978), screened at the concerts of the local rock band Irreal, that performed the film's soundtrack live.

His documentaries "Papa Gringo" (1983), "Ms. Olga' School" (1991) and "Cachilo, poet of the walls" (1999/2000) have had considerable circulation and recognition at film festivals and art events. “Mothers on Wheels” (2006), documentary co-directed by his wife Mónica Chirife, was commercially released in the cities of Rosario and Buenos Aires, and was awarded and exhibited in several countries, including Brazil, Spain and China.

He was director at the Local Super 8 Film Competitions in 1987 and 1988, and President of the Jury of the Rosario Latin American Video Festival in five editions, from 1993 to 1998.

He have worked at the Documentation Center at the Film School of Rosario since its opening in 1984, until 2016.

Retrospective screenings of his works were held at Super 8 Film Festivals in Brussels and Barcelona (1984), "Manuel Musto" School of Art (1996), College of Architecture and Design, University of Buenos Aires (1999), Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires (2001), the 8th Rosario Latin American Video Festival (2001), Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires (2007), the Iberoamerican Open University – UAI of Rosario (2010), the Department of Iberian and Latin American Cultures at Stanford University (2015) and the Super 8 section of the International Film Festival of Mar del Plata (2016).

The City Councilman of Rosario declared him Distinguished Filmmaker on October 6th, 2004.

Between 2001 and 2016 he has been the editor of an independent newsletter called Cineastas Rosarinos, distributed by e-mail to around 2000 filmmakers and film students in Rosario.

He's one of the founding members of the Documentary Makers Association of Rosario / ARDoc, created in September, 2010 and has been elected as its President.
